Task one "How to be the best digital architect"

This is the first task in my lecture of digital architecture on Friday, February 20th 2009. Digitalization has made many development and invention in mankind life. The consideration of digital technology in architecture is necessary and unavoidable, the new way of thinking, design, representation, visualization, practice, project, and so on. What is exactly digital architecture is? Digital Architecture (DA) is the mix of human behaviour analysis/research (social anthropology, web analytics, statistics, workshops) system hardware to create software in digital based system design. Including business process interpretation, user centred design, usability, accessibility, for web based systems and more specifically the input and output methodologies involved in human interaction (CHI/HCI) with computerised environments. Digital Architecture is often mistakenly associated with information architecture which often produces a limited view on digital projects. However Digital Architecture should be considered as specifically pertaining to digitised processes, interactive system architecture and dynamic data driven systems as distinct from processes that do not involve technology. A Digital Architect is a person of digital knowledge, practice and experience combined with a high level of creativity and a structured approach to digital projects. Digital Architects are not business analysts, information architects, user interface designers, graphic designers, developers or project managers rather they have a hybrid experience of the digital realm associated with a multi-disciplinary knowledge (wikipedia).
Architectural ideas have found new forms of digital representations, as information reconfigures into digital visualizations, and projects evolve further as digital fabrications. However, using digital technology doesn’t necessarily constitute creating digital architecture. Ideas are still scrutinized by the author(s). Thus, a responsibility for a critical dimension still falls upon the author(s). Any new categorizations of architecture must connect equally with the critical as well as the technological skill base of the authors. Just as there is a difference between building and architecture, there is also a distinct difference between digitally generated projects and digital architecture. New technology has always been a catalyst for new ideas in architecture. A positive digital future in architecture requires a clearer definiton of principles and skills necessary to maintain a rigor in emerging digital projects.
Benefit of using digital technologies in architecture practice:
  • Better overall project comprehension for project analysis, estimates and proposals.
  • Reduction in quantity take-off preparation time, error, and unanticipated change cost.
  • Reduction in project schedule delay risk with better communication, and identification of optimal construction sequences and object spatial clashes in advance of construction.
  • Reduction of injury and cost through highlighting and resolving safety issues in advance.
In my opinion, digitalization is just a way to help human in creating architectural project. We must realize that techology is also invention of human. So, basically development of our self to be a better human is needed as the main point to be the best digital architect. By doing so, we can manage and use technology as auxiliary of faster and efficient project.
